It isn’t easy to depict
a strong, independent
woman who can also find
great solace in the firm
hands of someone that
loves her, but Carolyn
Faulkner has created a
rich Universe where this
is the norm.
Kane is very good at
keep his life pretty
tidy, running the family
ranch, and taking care
of business in general.
He’s good at this kind
of life, and the only
awkward spot in it is
his mother’s constant
(and futile) attempts to
push him into marrying a
good woman.
Growing up in the same
small town, and knowing
his successful family,
Rissa had been around
Kane a lot, and had
suffered from
infatuation when she was
a girl. He’d been
big-brotherly to her,
which had forged a bit
of adolescent
hero-worship, but she
couldn’t have guessed at
the qualities just under
the surface of this man
, when growing up and
going away to college
pushed all of that into
her past – or so she
confidently believed.
After a marriage and
divorce, Rissa’s return
to her small hometown
draws her back into his
life unexpectedly, just
as time (and a mother’s
concern) are bringing
the issue of settling
down to a head.
Rediscovering what she’d
loved about him as a
girl, she also discovers
that he’s developed an
understated confidence,
and that he’s not above
taking her firmly in
hand when he thinks she
needs it, whether to
keep her physically, or
emotionally, safe.
Used to making
decisions, and making
sure that things go
right, Kane soon finds
that making sure that
things go right for
Rissa becomes more and
more important – even if
that requires driving
home the point over his
knee.
A tender, caring man who
won’t hesitate to
blister her bottom when
she’s not being careful
with herself, changes
everything, to her great
surprise. Lovely,
growing romance between
two people who are
failing to remain aloof
toward each other,
merges the passion of
falling in love, with
the electricity of his
disciplinary dominance,
and try as she might to
resist, being soundly
spanked by the man he’s
become draws her toward
being a less and less
“reluctant bride”, over
time.
This portrait of a
strong woman who finds a
greater love than she
thought existed in the
arms, and over the lap,
of a man who was even
stronger, is one of
Carolyn Faulkner’s
classic romances,
bringing the headiness
of newfound passion,
which isn’t afraid of
some very loving
discipline, to the
realism of modern
relationships.
